After digitizing pictures, here is how to better enjoy your photos

Years ago, photo albums were meant to organize our photos and keep them safe for future generations. However, unless archival-quality albums were used to store your treasured pictures, the acidic paper of a photo album can deteriorate printed photos over time.

This is the dilemma that ScanMyPhotos customer Lee Jackto is currently facing with her parents’ photo albums.

“My mom has about 25+ albums that are decaying rapidly—the pictures are turning yellow and are stuck in that acid-type folder paper. These albums contain pictures of me growing up, starting with my baby photos, and pictures of my parent’s wedding—overall there are about 50 years worth of photos in them.”

Lee did some online research to find a company that could scan her photos and restore some of the quality. She discovered ScanMyPhotos from a CNET recommendation and decided to move forward.

The Importance of Preserving Memories and Heritage

Irene as a child playing in the fields

Before weekenders casually explored the ocean-side vistas of Santa Barbara and well before the Pacific Coast Highway carved its way through the Pacific Ocean’s shore, the Chumash Native Americans called the greater areas of Los Angeles, Ventura, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara counties home.

Once a thriving population of between 15,000 and 18,500 natives, the number of Chumash today is in the 2,000-5,000 range. It’s more likely you will hear of those who are of Chumash descent and even those numbers are beginning to dwindle. As such, preservation is key for the Chumash and their descendants. This is just one of the many reasons why it was so important for ScanMyPhotos customer Irene Stonecipher to scan her precious photos.

A few years ago, Irene began her photo-scanning project by sending one box at a time to ScanMyPhotos. However, the project encountered a few hiccups along the way.

“In the process of scanning all my photos, I decided to try another photo scanning company. I live in Prescott and they’re in Phoenix (less than 100 miles away). I boxed up an order and sent it to the company, but three months later, I found myself at the point of filing a theft report. I called the company several times for updates but my calls and emails went answered. It was as if the company fell off the face of the planet and took all my photos with them! Then, months later, I opened my front door and the box of photos was back, looking the same as when I sent it with no further information provided.”

It’s a nightmare scenario: you finally decide to save time and money by packing up and shipping your precious print photos to a scanning service to digitize but the photos disappear in transit. In fact, this actually happened to one of our customers, Irene S.

I boxed up an order and sent it to the company, but three months later, I found myself at the point of filing a theft report. Then, months later, I opened my front door and the box of photos was back—it looked the same as when I sent it with no further information provided.”

Irene shared this story with us after the positive experience she had at ScanMyPhotos. She was exceedingly lucky to get those photos back.

The Surprise Anniversary Gift that Garnered Happy Tears

anniversary gift

We all know that classic love story where two kids grow up next door to each other and eventually fall in love, get married, and live a happily ever after tale. Well, one ScanMyPhotos customer shared a similar story with us–but with a twist.

Brian Jorgensen and his wife didn’t grow up together in the same sleepy home town. They didn’t share a similar childhood, background, or even culture. But despite their different upbringings, they got together in high school and just recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary where Brian pulled together a very special and touching gift for his wife.

“I was looking to scan the print photos I had of my wife and I so I could surprise her with them for our 20th wedding anniversary party. That’s how I found out about ScanMyPhotos—through a Google search.”
