Why transfer those old reels to DVD?

Much like photos, slides and negatives, your old home movies fade over time. Converting them to DVD is the quickest and easiest way to ensure that your treasured movies are preserved for the next generation. ScanMyPhotos.com has a new and improved 8mm transfer service to produce high quality movies from your old 8mm and Super8 reels. Bring those old home movies into the digital age. The improved transfer system boasts:

Scene by Scene Density Adjustment - As your film is digitized, the technician will manually adjust the scene to offer the best possible balance of clarity and overall look for that specific scene.
Manual Retiming of Movie - 8mm and Super8 film used to run at frame rates ranging from 16 to 23 frames per second. Current standards for DVDs is 29.97 frames per second. To compensate for this discrepancy, other companies simply speed up the reel to match current standards. This causes the "silent movie" effect where everyone seems to be in a rush and moving quickly. Since we are capturing your reels frame-by-frame, we can retime the movie to appear at a normal speed without loss of quality or flicker.
Flicker Free Playback - Since we digitize your film frame-by-frame and manually retime the movie, you no longer get the flicker effect that plagues so many other transfers.
Full Frame Capture - We capture as much of the film as possible with no stretching or distorting of your movie to give you the most of your movie.
Menu with Selectable Chapters - We create DVDs with full menus and chapter selections so you can watch either all of the movies or select just the reels you want to watch.
Transfer in Order - Each reel is used to create a chapter on the DVD. If you would like them in a specific order, simply number the reels and we will transfer them in that order.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Super8 reels are transferred WITHOUT sound. We have found the audio tracks to be unreliable in transfer and create other problems.

Why Not Hi-Def?

While many TVs these days display Hi-Def, not everyone has the capability to play Hi-Def videos. Specifically, this requires a Blu-Ray player that can play Hi-Def DVDs. According to a recent study, only 15% of households currently own a Blu-Ray player, which means the overwhelming majority do not. DVDs on the other hand are universally playable, in DVD players, in Blu-Ray players and in computers. Additionally, most Blu-Ray players and many DVD players have an upscale ability to convert your videos on the fly to a 1080 format. While this is not perfect, it typically does a good job of simulating Hi-Def.

One must also remember that often times newer technology is limited by old technology. 8mm film has a frame size of just 3.3x4.5mm and the current average TV size is currently 46" diagonal. That is a 173 times larger. By capturing your film frame-by-frame, we are able to capture the highest quality conversion but the larger the TV the final product is viewed on, the more the grain of the original film will be visible.
