momentWhat’s your very first memory? Was it a birthday party? An image of a smiling loved one playing with your toys? Or maybe it was a funny moment where the particulars are hazy but you do remember laughing so much it hurt.

Chances are that most of our earliest memories are based on a photo. The pictures serve as a sort of trigger that, upon seeing them, a flood of memories and emotions from that moment are released. With one look at a picture, we can relive the joy, love, and contentment we experienced all those years ago.

Part 6: Managing Memories through Separation or Divorce

In a recent poll, we asked our customers what was the #1 reason for having their photos scanned and digitized. As it turns out, the need to evenly divide memories due to a separation or divorce was the major motivating factor.

For us here at ScanMyPhotos, we often get questions regarding managing memories during a separation or divorce. We do our best to provide professional and helpful customer service for anyone who is going through tough times—and we stick to our policies during the most delicate of situations. However, in order to make the process a much smoother experience for everyone involved, we pulled together the following tips.

Remember that everyone can receive (and replicate) digital copies

It is far easier to split photos down the middle than it is to divide up any other physical assets. The Strong Connection Between Photo Scanning, Leaving a Legacy, and Learning Family History

If you’re a grandparent like our customer Linda Pompel, it is likely you have decades-old albums, filled with photos from high school, college, the early days of married life, your children as babies, and numerous family vacations. You might even have albums that belonged to your parents.

Since you can still recall who is in what photo and when and where it was taken, this is the time to get those photos digitized so they are preserved for your grandchildren – and future generations. It is exactly what Linda is doing, and she is having great fun with the project.

Linda recently sent us about 800 photos after taking apart decades-old albums. “I was married in 1967 and had photos for 50-60 years since I got my first little camera,” she recounted. “I sent them in [to ScanMyPhotos], and I was, of course nervous to not have them in my possession, but everything went fine. I got back this DVD with all these wonderful photos.”

It’s through the photos that we’ve actually met our grandmother.

As she and her husband went through the photos, there were quite a few things she had forgotten about. “We went from picture to picture looking at our kids being born, growing up, our parents – all of our family was right there…. I have photos of the kids’ very first steps. I knew they were ready to walk, so the camera was right there. Those were really special.”
