The Jan. 15 crash of a U.S. Airways plane into the Hudson River off of Manhattan in New York made international news, and so did an image of the plane that brought down TwitPic, a feature on Twitter. Janis Krums, a Sarasota, Fla., resident aboard a nearby commuter ferry on the Hudson river, took a photo of the plane as it was being evacuated, reports CNET News. Krums posted the photo on TwitPic, which allows users of mobile phones to post pictures to Twitter, and the image received so much traffic it caused the website to temporarily shut down.
According to Noah Everett, the founder of TwitPic, after the photo of the plane was re-tweeted by a large number of people and then picked up by several news sites, the resulting traffic was too much for the siteβs servers, reports the article. Everett said that there had been about 7,000 views of the picture before the site went down, and that there were about 500 additional requests to view it every 15 or 20 seconds. Twitter, a new social media becoming an increasingly popular means of communication, allows users to send messages from sms, web, mobile web, instant message, or from third party applications to the site. The simple means of communication, based on answering the question βWhat are you doing?β has become an outlet for real-time news updates and business networking.
